Originally introduced as the Gold Nugget in 1986, the Kangaroo bullion coin underwent a transformation in 1990 to feature the iconic kangaroo due to its widespread appeal. Notably, in February 2012, The Perth Mint launched the one ton (1012 kg) Kangaroo Gold Coin, a promotional endeavour for the Kangaroo Bullion series, boasting a face value of one million Australian Dollars and a purity of 99.99 percent.
The reverse of the 2022 coin showcases the cherished kangaroo, a quintessential emblem of Australia, with its joey. The duo is captured in motion, hopping across the verdant Australian landscape, with distant hills on the horizon, inscribed with the word 'Kangaroo', alongside the coin's weight and purity. The letter 'P' serves as the mintmark of The Perth Mint and the initials of the designer, Neil Hollis, are also displayed.
On the obverse, Jody Clark’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II features her majesty aged 89. The legend is inscribed with the words ‘ELIZABETH II’ and ‘AUSTRALIA’ plus the denomination written as ‘100 DOLLARS’. The coin is legal tender in Australia.
For added security the coin has a micro laser engraved authentication feature, detectable solely through a microscope or magnifying glass, offering an extra level of security that undoubtedly provides peace of mind for investors.
The Australian Kangaroo 1oz Gold Coin 2022 is minted from 1 troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold with a metric weight of 31.10 grams. It measures 32.10 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 2.80 mm. The 2022 Kangaroo bullion coin is also available as a ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz in gold and 1oz in silver.
