Perth Mint
The Perth Mint is one of the world’s most renowned precious metal mints. The Lunar Gold coin series ran from 1996 to 2007. The series consists of 12 unique animal designs that celebrate the Chinese Zodiac. The 1997 “Year of the Ox” is the second coin in the series.
In the Chinese Zodiac, people born under the rule of the Ox are said to be strong, dependable, determined and diligent. The birth years of the Ox are 1913, 1925, 1937 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, and 2021.

The front side of the coin depicts a large muscular Ox standing on a field. The inscriptions read “1/4 OZ 9999 GOLD”, the Chinese character for Ox, and the year of issue “1997”.

The reverse side shows the portrait of young Queen Elizabeth II with diadem, earring and necklace. The portrait of the queen was designed by artist Raphael Maklouf. The inscriptions around the outer edge are “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRALIA” and “25 DOLLARS”.
