The Noah’s Ark 1oz Silver Coin 2023 is issued by the Central Bank of Armenia. It draws its inspiration from the biblical story of Noah's Ark, which is found in the Book of Genesis in the Bible. According to the story, Noah built an ark under the instruction of God to save himself, his family and a pair of every kind of animal from a great flood that would cover the Earth. The ark eventually came to rest on Mount Ararat after the floodwaters receded.
The choice of this theme for the coin reflects both the cultural and historical significance of the story, as well as the prominence of Mount Ararat in Armenian culture and history. Mount Ararat is a symbol of Armenia, even though it is currently located in Turkey. It holds great significance in Armenian folklore, identity and national consciousness.
The reverse features the iconic vessel floating on the choppy floodwaters with Mount Ararat in the background. The sun is shining, partly covered by the mountain, with its rays spread across the sky. In the foreground is a flying dove holding an olive branch in its beak, the bird spills into the legend. The inscription reads ‘NOAH’S ARK’ in both English and Armenian.
The obverse displays the Armenian coat of arms along with the denomination, weight and purity of the silver. It has a face value of 500 dram and is legal tender in Armenia.
The Noah’s Ark 1oz Silver Coin 2023 contains one troy ounce of 999.9/1000 silver with a metric equivalent weight of 31.10 grams. It measures 38.60 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 2.70 mm. It is also available in weights of ½ oz and ¼ oz and there is a 1oz gold version.
