Myths and Legends "Little John" 10 oz Silver Coin 2024 margin scheme
The Little John 10oz Silver Coin 2024 is part of the Myths and Legends Collection from the Royal Mint in Wales. It is one of the three-coin Robin Hood series within the collection that was inspired by the legend of the famous rebel. Robin and Maid Marian are the other two coins which complete the set.
The legend states that Little John was part of the band of merry men who lived in Sherwood forest and, under their leader Robin Hood, robbed from the rich to give to the poor. John was a giant of a man so was amusingly nicknamed Little John.
The reverse of the coin displays the tall, bearded figure in the forest surrounded by foliage, clutching his staff ready for an encounter. The design, by Jody Clark, includes incredible detail shown in the bark on the trees, the waves in his hair and the creases in his clothes. On his belt hangs a small bag together with a horn to alert the other men. Around the edge of the coin his name Little John, is written along with the weight, purity and year of minting. The image of Little John in the forest spills out over the edge at the bottom giving it a more realistic feel.
The obverse of the coin displays the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by the highly skilled sculptor, Martin Jennings. The outer edge has the inscription ’ ᐧ CHARLES III ᐧ D ᐧ G ᐧ REX ᐧ F ᐧ D ᐧ 10 POUNDS’.
The diameter of the coin is 89.00 mm and it contains 10 troy ounces of 999.9 fine silver. It has a denomination of £10 and is legal tender in the United Kingdom. The metric weight of the coin is 311.035 grams.
