The Royal Mint in Wales is one of the world’s finest producers of bullion investment coins and introduced the Royal Tudor Beasts collection as a tribute to ten stone statues of these beasts that are displayed at Hampton Court Palace. The first coin of this intriguing series was the Lion of England and the second is the majestic Yale of Beaufort.
The yale is portrayed on the obverse of the coin and was designed by the highly talented illustrator and sculptor, David Lawrence. The creature has large horns and is described as resembling an antelope or a goat which is the size of a horse and has the tail of an elephant, it clutches a shield displaying the coat of arms of Jane Seymour, the third wife of King Henry VIII of England and mother of King Edward VI. The image also includes a chainmail surface animation in the background to ensure greater protection against counterfeiting.
The reverse of the coin displays Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The inscription surrounding the image is “ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 5 POUNDS · ”. Five UK pounds is the face value of the coin, it is made from two troy ounces of 999.9 fine silver with a diameter of 38.61mm, a thickness of 5.55mm with a milled edge. It is offered in a single coin capsule. The coin is also available in a 10oz silver version plus 1oz and ¼ oz in gold and 1oz in platinum.
