The Lunar III series is a collection of coins produced by the Perth Mint in Australia, and is a part of the broader Lunar coin series celebrating the animals of the Chinese zodiac. Launched in 2020 with the Year of the Mouse (or Rat), this series follows the Lunar II and the original Lunar I series. Each year, a new coin is released representing the animal of the Chinese zodiac for that year.

The tiger is the third animal in the Chinese zodiac cycle. In Chinese culture, it is considered the king of all beasts and represents power, courage, and bravery. People born in the Year of the Tiger are believed to inherit these characteristics, being seen as confident, charismatic, and ambitious individuals. The tiger is deeply respected and often associated with protection against evil spirits. In the Lunar calendar, the Year of the Tiger occurs every 12 years, with recent years being 2010, 2022, and upcoming in 2034.

The reverse showcases an adult tiger with a cub walking across rocky terrain, with bamboo plants and ferns either side. The Chinese character for tiger is displayed at the top with the word ‘TIGER’ and the year of issue underneath. The image includes the ‘P’ mintmark representing the Perth mint and the initials ‘JM’ for the designer, Jennifer McKenna.

The obverse displays Jody Clark's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, with details of the weight, purity and monetary denomination in the surrounding legend. The coin has a face value of 8 dollars and is legal tender in Australia.

The Lunar III Tiger 5oz Silver Coin 2022 contains five troy ounces of 999.9/1000 fine silver and has a metric weight of 155.52 grams. It measures 60.60 mm in diameter and has a  thickness of 7.2 mm. It is also available in varying weights including 10 kilos, 1 kilo, 2oz, 1oz and ½ oz. Additionally, the gold edition of the 2022 Lunar III Tiger features an alternative reverse image and is available in weights of 2oz, 1oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz.

These coins are highly coveted by collectors worldwide due to their limited mintages, intricate designs, and investment potential.
