The Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt (Bavarian State Mint), located in Munich, is one of the oldest still-operating mints in Germany. Officially established in 1871, its origins date back to the 12th century.
Today, the mint is responsible for producing German circulation, commemorative, and collector coins on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Finance. Coins minted in Munich bear the mint mark “D”.

The 2023 Somalia Elephant ½ oz Gold Coin is part of the African Wildlife Series, known for its beautifully detailed depictions of African elephants. The motif side of the coin features an adult elephant stretching upward to feed from a tree, its mouth filled with leaves. In the background, the sun shines over the vast landscape of the African savannah. The surrounding inscription reads "· AFRICAN WILDLIFE · ELEPHANT · 1/4 oz Au 999.9".
The value side displays the Somali national coat of arms, with the year of minting displayed as “20” and “23” on either side of the emblem. The country of origin, “SOMALIA REPUBLIC” is inscribed above, while the coin’s face value of “500 SHILLINGS” appears below the coat of arms.
The Somalia Elephant ½ oz Gold Coin 2023 has a purity of 999.9/1000 and weighs 15.55 grams. It has a diameter of 33.00 mm. It is also available in 1oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz in gold and 1oz in fine silver.
