🇸🇴 Somalia Elephant 2023 – 1/2 oz Gold Coin – African Wildlife in a Classic Gold Minting
The Somalia Elephant 2023 – 1/2 oz gold coin belongs to the well-known African Wildlife series, which presents African elephants in annually changing designs. This coin program combines nature-inspired motifs with modern minting techniques and a calm, clear visual language. A defining feature of the series is the annually changing elephant motif, while the overall structure and design of the coin remain consistent over many years. The mid-sized denomination preserves the familiar design concept in full.
The obverse shows the coat of arms of Somalia. Two leopards support a shield bearing a five-pointed star, beneath which appear crossed spears and palm fronds. Surrounding inscriptions indicate the issuing country Somalia, the denomination, and the year of issue 2023. The depiction appears clearly structured and precisely executed. The restrained design of the value side creates a harmonious overall impression, allowing the gold surface to remain visible and emphasizing the classic appearance of the coin.
The reverse features the African elephant as the central motif of the issue. In the 2023 design, an adult elephant appears together with a young calf in an open savanna landscape. The scene conveys a sense of calmness and connection to nature. Birds can be seen in the sky above the animals, while typical trees of the African landscape appear in the background. The composition focuses on the natural presence of the elephant, avoiding an overly complex background.
The powerful body of the elephant, the characteristic trunk, and the distinct contours are finely modeled. In particular, the textured depiction of the skin gives the motif sculptural depth. Light and shadow move across the relief surface, allowing the details to stand out clearly. As a result, the motif appears lively while maintaining calmness and clarity.
Along the rim of the design side appear the inscriptions AFRICAN WILDLIFE and ELEPHANT, together with the weight and fineness of the precious metal. The coin consists of 1/2 oz of fine gold with a purity of 999.9 and carries a face value of 500 Somali Shillings.
The 1/2 oz denomination offers a balanced size in which the motif is particularly well displayed. The gold surface shows a warm, even luster, highlighting the precise relief structures. The contours of the elephant and the landscape elements are clearly defined and harmoniously connected.
The African Wildlife – Elephant series is known for its annually changing elephant motifs. Each issue presents a new interpretation of the animal while maintaining the characteristic style of the series.
The Somalia Elephant 2023 – 1/2 oz gold coin combines the warm radiance of gold with a calm depiction of African wildlife. It portrays the elephant as a powerful yet composed symbol of the savanna, struck in gold and designed with clarity, structure, and timeless elegance.
