The 2018 Somalia Leopard 1 oz Gold coin is the second animal in the African Wildlife Series from the Bavarian State Mint. The Somalia African Wildlife Coin Series was first issued in 2004 and depicts the iconic African Elephant as the main motif.
After 15 years of success with the Somalia “Elephant”, the Mint introduced the “Leopard” as the second animal in the series.

Design
The motif side of the coin shows a full sized leopard looking over his left shoulder with a rocky landscape in the background. The exquisite detail in the design shows the leopards whiskers and spots on its coat. The engravings on the outer edge are “LEOPARD”, “AFRICAN WILDLIFE” and “1 oz Au 999.9”. The edge bar is reeded and slightly raised, which provides added protection to the coin surface.
The value side depicts a shield with a 5 pointed star in the center. The shield is held by leopards on either side. Below are two feathers along with two arrows that are surrounded by a ribbon.
The date of issue is split of either side of the leopards and reads “20” on the left and “18” on the right. The country of origin “SOMALI REPUBLIC” is engraved on the top margin. The face value of “1000 SHILLINGS” is below the motif. There is also an ornamental circle of dots that surrounds the outer edge.
