🇸🇴 Somalia Elephant 2020 – 1/10 oz Gold Coin – African Wildlife in Fine Gold Minting
The Somalia Elephant 2020 – 1/10 oz gold coin belongs to the well-known African Wildlife series, which presents African elephants in annually changing designs. This coin program combines nature-inspired motifs with modern minting techniques and a calm, clear visual language. A defining feature of the series is the annually changing elephant motif, while the overall structure and basic design of the coin remain consistent over many years. Even in the smaller denomination, this design concept remains fully visible and preserves the distinctive style of the series.
The obverse shows the coat of arms of Somalia. Two leopards support a shield bearing a five-pointed star, beneath which appear crossed spears and palm fronds, elements that belong to the traditional heraldic design. Surrounding inscriptions indicate the issuing country Somalia, the denomination, and the year of issue 2020. The depiction appears clearly structured and precisely modeled. The restrained composition of the value side creates a harmonious overall impression, allowing space for the gold surface and emphasizing the classic appearance of the coin.
The reverse features the African elephant as the central motif of the coin. In the 2020 design, an adult elephant appears together with a young calf in an open savanna landscape. The scene conveys a sense of calmness and connection to nature. Birds can be seen in the sky above the animals, while typical trees of the African landscape appear in the background.
The powerful body of the elephant, the long trunk, and the distinct contours are finely modeled. In particular, the textured depiction of the skin gives the relief a sculptural depth. Light and shadow move across the surface of the motif, allowing the details to stand out clearly. This creates a depiction that appears lively while maintaining the calm character of the series.
Along the rim of the design side appear the inscriptions AFRICAN WILDLIFE and ELEPHANT, together with the weight and fineness of the precious metal. The coin consists of 1/10 oz of fine gold with a purity of 999.9 and carries a face value of 100 Somali Shillings.
