Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt

The Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt (Bavarian State Mint), located in Munich, is one of the oldest still-operating mints in Germany. Officially established in 1871, its origins date back to the 12th century.

Today, the mint is responsible for producing German circulation, commemorative, and collector coins on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Finance. Coins minted in Munich bear the mint mark “D”.

In addition to official coins, the Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt also produces medals, awards, and custom special issues for both private and institutional clients. It represents precision, craftsmanship, and centuries-old minting tradition.

The 2020 edition of the popular “African Wildlife” series “Somalia Elephant” is another coin that should not be missing from a coin collection.

The Somalia Elephant 1 ounce gold coin has a fineness of 999.9/1,000, is 38.70 mm in diameter and has a face value of 1,000 shillings. The gold coins are minted by the Bavarian Mint in Munich and are available in denominations of ½ ounce, ¼ ounce, 1/10 ounce and 0.5 grams.

The edge of the coin is fluted and the edge bar is slightly raised to protect the surface of the motif. The coin is issued in an original capsule from the mint.

The motif on the obverse shows two elephants facing each other in the African savannah with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background.

Inside of the edge of the coin and surrounding the motif are the inscriptions "AFRICAN WILDLIFE", "ELEPHANT" and "1 oz Au 999.9”.

As in previous gold coin editions, the reverse shows the Somali national coat of arms, which was made official in 1956. The only change is the year, which is displayed to the left and right of the coat of arms with a 20 on each side to make 2020.

Above the coat of arms you can see the inscription SOMALI REPUBLIC. The lower part of the coin displays the face value of “1,000 SHILLINGS”.

The Somalia Elephant series might achieve remarkable increases in value due to its changing motifs and its beautifully detailed and elaborate designs. Older years are hard to come by and if they are found, they are usually priced well above the listed gold price.
