The obverse of the American Buffalo 1oz Gold Coin features a striking portrayal of James Earle Fraser's classic 1913 Type 1 Buffalo Nickel design. This profile of a Native American chief was created by combining the features of three chiefs from different American Indian tribes, they were Big Tree, Iron Tail and Two Moons. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed prominently along the edge, with the year of minting and Fraser's initial "F" also present.
The reverse of the American Buffalo 1oz Gold Coin 2024 actually features the American Bison although the coin is named the Buffalo. The relief is also derived from James Earle Fraser's iconic 1913 Type 1 Buffalo Nickel design. The detailed depiction captures the strength and majesty of the animal, standing on a mound of dirt, with every muscle and fur line rendered with precision. Above the image, the inscriptions "UNITED ᐧ STATES ᐧ OF ᐧ AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are included and below the coin’s denomination "$50", weight "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD" and the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" are clearly displayed.
