The US mint was founded in 1792 and mints all circulating US-Dollar notes, coins and world-famous gold and silver investment products, such as the American Eagle.
The US Mint's portfolio was expanded in 2006 to include the American Buffalo gold coin and this beautiful coin has been available ever since. Unlike the American Eagle gold coin, the Buffalo is minted in pure gold with a purity of 99.99%.
The American Buffalo 1oz gold coins are not minted in Philadelphia but at the "West Point" mint in New York. The coin has an embossed "W" for West Point displayed at the top. The 2023 coin is available for investors both in the standard "Brilliant Uncirculated" version and in the Proof collector's version with a certificate and box included.
The motif side of the American Buffalo shows an Indian head in profile view. Both the front and back motifs were designed by the sculptor James Earle Fraser (1876-1953) and had already been used for the so-called "Buffalo Nickel" or "Indian Head Nickel" - a 5 cent circulation coin that was minted from 1913 to 1938.
A North American buffalo (or bison) is depicted on the value side of the coin. The bison named "Black Diamond" was chosen as the namesake, which was considered one of the biggest attractions in the New York Zoo in the years 1893 to 1915. James E. Fraser was the designer of the coin. His mark is shown on the lower edge of the coin as "F".
The American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin 2023 has a total weight of 31.1 grams, a diameter of 32.7 mm and a thickness of 2.95 mm. The face value is $50.
The American Buffalo is only issued in the 1oz size. 2008 was the only year to issue other sizes when ½, ¼ and 1/10 ounce versions were also released.
