The Indian Head 5 Dollar Gold coin was minted from 1908-1916 and then again in 1929. Each coin contains 90% gold and 10% copper with a fine weight of .24187 ounces. The Indian Head gold coin came about due to President Theodore Roosevelt’s commission to re-design US gold coinage in the early 1900’s.
Design
The front side of the coin depicts a Native American Indian wearing a headdress. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on the top outer edge. There are also 13 stars that surround the outer edge. The date of issue is on the bottom outer edge.
The reverse side shows a bald eagle standing on a sheaf of arrows. The country of origin “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is embossed around the top outer edge. The nominal value can be seen below the eagle.
