Benefits

American Eagle fractional gold coins are some of the most popular investment coins in the world. Fractional gold coins provide added flexibility for gold investors and are ideal for buyers who are looking for alternatives to the 1 oz coin.

Another benefit is that fractional coins, like the American Eagle, provide investors with different price points. This allows both collectors and investors to own many different types of globally recognized coins that all have their unique benefits.

Some investors prefer to own a portfolio of coins that include all the popular brand names such as the American Eagle, the Canadian Maple Leaf, the Krugerrand, and the Austrian Vienna Philharmonic. Fractional coins make it easy to own a variety of different coins from many mints.

The disadvantage of fractional coins is that they often carry a higher premium than the the 1 oz coins. The reason is that the costs to mint smaller coins are higher. As a result, investors must weigh the advantages that factional coins provide with the higher premiums.

Generally speaking, investors who are looking to acquire the most gold at the lowest premium should consider 1oz coins and/or bars.

History

Gold American Eagles were introduced in 1986 after the passage of the Gold Bullion Act of 1985. The act stipulates that the US Mint has to produce bullion from gold that is mined in the United Sates. Gold Eagles that were minted between 1986 and 1991 are dated with roman numerals. In 1992 the US Mint switched to arabic numbers for dating American Eagles. The bullion coins carry a face value of $50, $25, $10 and $5 for the four sizes in the coin series. The coins are considered legal tender in the United States. However, the intrinsic vale of the Gold is much higher than the face value.
