Rand Refinery (Pty) Ltd, based in Germiston, South Africa, was founded in 1920 by the Chamber of Mines. It is the world’s largest integrated single-site precious metals refining and smelting complex.
Its main function is the refining of raw gold to a purity of at least 99.5%, which is then used for cast or minted bar products, or as raw material for the production of Krugerrand coins.
The refinery is one of only five LBMA Good Delivery Referees worldwide – a mark of excellence that certifies the highest standards in quality, purity, and responsible sourcing.

First issued in South Africa in 1967, the Krugerrand is a highly recognised bullion coin. Its obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, originally designed by Otto Schultz in 1892, surrounded by the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” (Afrikaans for South Africa) and “SOUTH AFRICA” in English.

The Krugerrand’s reverse features a pronking springbok, designed by Coert Steynberg in 1947. It bears the inscription “KRUGERRAND” plus the year of mintage and the coin’s weight. Relatively unchanged over the years, this design reflects South Africa’s natural heritage and reinforces the Krugerrand’s iconic status.

The gold Krugerrand, with a purity of 917/1000, contains a significant amount of copper for added durability, giving it a reddish tint. Despite lacking a face value, it is officially accepted as legal tender in South Africa.

The Krugerrand ½ oz Gold Coin 2025 is minted from ½ a troy ounce of fine gold and has a fine weight of 15.55 grams. It has a diameter of 27.00 mm and a thickness of 2.215 mm. The Krugerrand is also available in weights of 1 oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz in gold and 1 oz in silver.

The Krugerrand’s history, design and reputation make it one of the world’s most sought-after bullion coins, symbolising stability and wealth.
