Rand Refinery
The Rand Refinery was the inventor of the standard 1oz investment gold coin. With the launch of the Krugerrand in 1967 it still produces the most well-known gold coin in the world today.
The obverse of the Krugerrand ¼ oz Gold Coin 2025 showcases a portrait of Paul Kruger, designed by Otto Schultz in 1892, with the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” (Afrikaans for South Africa) and “SOUTH AFRICA” in English.
The reverse depicts a pronking springbok and includes the inscription “KRUGERRAND” along with the year of mintage and the coin’s weight.
The coin has a gold purity of 917/1000 and a high copper content, enhancing its durability and giving it a distinctive reddish hue. Though it carries no face value, it is legally recognised as tender in South Africa.
