Rand Refinery
Rand Refinery (Pty) Ltd, based in Germiston, South Africa, was founded in 1920 by the Chamber of Mines. It is the world’s largest integrated single-site precious metals refining and smelting complex.
Its main function is the refining of raw gold to a purity of at least 99.5%, which is then used for cast or minted bar products, or as raw material for the production of Krugerrand coins.
The refinery is one of only five LBMA Good Delivery Referees worldwide – a mark of excellence that certifies the highest standards in quality, purity, and responsible sourcing.

The Krugerrand was first minted in 1967 to market South African gold and named after Paul Kruger and the country's currency. The obverse displays a relief of Paul Kruger, designed by Otto Schultz in 1892, together with the inscriptions "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA". Suid-Afrika is Afrikaans for South Africa.
The reverse of the Krugerrand ½ oz Gold Coin 2022 features a native South African springbok and was designed by Coert Steynberg in 1947. The inscriptions include "KRUGERRAND", the year of minting and the weight. Over the years the Krugerrand's reverse design has only undergone very minor changes.
The gold Krugerrand, with a purity of 22 karats (917/1000), contains copper as an alloying component to the 24 karat gold, lending it greater durability and a distinct reddish hue. Whilst its face value is absent from the coin, it retains legal tender status in South Africa.
The Krugerrand ½ oz Gold Coin 2022 is minted from half a troy ounce of fine gold and has a fine weight of 15.55 grams. It has a diameter of 27.00 mm. The Krugerrand is also available in weights of 1oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz in gold and 1oz in silver.
