The Krugerrand gold coin was introduced in 1967 and is one of the best selling gold bullion coins in the world. Since it introduction, over 50 million ounces of Krugerrand gold coins have been sold.
The 2019 Krugerrand ½ oz gold coin has a purity of .9167 gold and is produced by the South African Mint.
The Krugerrands 22k gold-copper alloy is known as “Crown Gold”, which was first used for British Gold Sovereigns in 1526. Crown gold coins are more durable than pure gold coins.
The motif side of the coin depicts the portrait of Paul Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic. The engravings on the top outer edge are “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA”.
The reverse side shows the South African Springbok Antelope. Below the motif on the right side are the initials “CLS”, which represent artist and engraver Coert Steynberg. The inscription on the top margin reads “KRUGERRAND”. The date of issue is on either side of the antelope as “20” and “19”. The fine weight “FYNGOUD ½ OZ FINE GOLD” is embossed on the bottom.
