The ½ oz size is ideal for first time gold investors or for those who are looking to add to a current gold bullion portfolio.

Appearance

The front of the 2018 ½ oz Gold Krugerrand depicts the portrait of Paul Kruger, who was the president of South Africa from 1882-1902. Surrounding the outer edge of the coin are the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” and SOUTH AFRICA”

On the reverse side of the Krugerrand is the image of a springbok antelope, which is the national animal of South Africa. Stamped on the top outer edge is the word "KRÜGERRAND". To the left and right of the springbok antelope is the year of the coinage. Around the bottom outer edge are the words "FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD". The initials of coin designer Coert L.Steynberg appear below the motif.

History

The Krugerrand was introduced in 1967 and was one of the first gold bullion coins that was made available to private investors. The Krugerrand enjoyed much early success as there was very little competition from other gold bullion coins at the time. By 1980, the Krugerrand dominated the global gold investment coin market with a 90% share.

Sales of the Krugerrand slowed in the early 1980’s due to economic sanctions against South Africa because of its apartheid policy. This provided an opportunity for the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf (1979) and the American Gold Eagle (1986) to introduce gold coins to the global market.

Today, the Krugerrand still enjoys global popularity and is one of the top gold bullion coins on the market. Over 50 million ounces of Gold Krugerrands have been sold since the coin was introduced in 1967. As a result, Krugerrands are easy to buy and sell around the world.

Advantages

• Design has remained consistent since the coin was first introduced

• The gold-copper alloy is durable and scratch resistant

• High quality gold coin with a storied history.

• The edge of the Krugerrand is fluted to detect any manipulation
