Design
Designed by Otto Schultz, the front of the Krugerrand bears the portrait of statesman Paul Kruger, who was a four term president of the South African Republic. Surrounding the outer edge are the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA”
The reverse depicts the springbok antelope, which is one of the national symbols of South Africa. The motif was designed by Coert Steynberg. Stamped along the bottom are the words “Fyngoud 1oz Fine Gold”. To the left and right of the springbok is the year of mintage.
History
The name of the Krugerrand comes from the combination of “Kruger”, the former president of South Africa and “Rand”, the name of the South African currency. The coin was first introduced in 1967 and by 1980 became the best selling gold investment coin in the world. To this day the Krugerrand enjoys global popularity.
