History

The 1 oz Krugerrand was introduced in 1967 and was the first real gold bullion product for the retail investor. The coin was an instant success and by 1980 the Krugerrand had a 90% market share in global gold coin sales.

In the 1980’s sales of Krugerrands began to decrease. Economic sanctions due to South Africa’s policy on apartheid made the Krugerrand illegal to import in many western countries.

The success of the Krugerrand opened the door for other investment coins to enter the market. These included:

  • The Canadian Maple Leaf in 1979

  • The Australian Nugget in 1986

  • The Chinese Gold Panda in 1982

  • The American Gold Eagle in 1986

  • The British Britannia in 1987

It is estimated that 50 million ounces of gold Krugerrands have been sold since the coin was first introduced in 1967.
