Krugerrand 1/4oz Gold Coin different years
Rand Refinery
The Rand Refinery was the inventor of the standard 1oz investment gold coin. With the launch of the Krugerrand in 1967 it still produces the most well-known gold coin in the world today.
The Krugerrand is the most known and beloved gold coin worldwide. Minted in South Africa the Krugerrand has a fine weight of 7.78 grams.
Alloy
The 1/4oz Krugerrand comes in a classical 22 carat gold-copper alloy and contains 91.66% gold and 8.34% copper. The higher copper content makes the coin more resistance to scratches and therefore more durable. A clear advantage of the 1/4oz Krugerrand coin.

Origin
1967 was the first edition of the Krugerrand 1oz coins in South Africa issued. In 1980 smaller denominations such as ½, ¼ and 1/10oz were issued. Next to the Rand the Krugerrand is legal tender in South Africa. The name Krugerrand contains two words: Kruger and Rand. Rand is the official South African currency and Paul Kruger was president of the republic Transvaal. The word “Rand” describes an area in South Africa where gold was found in 1886. Until today Witwatersrand is one of the most important gold mining areas in the world.
