The Angel gold coin is one of the most famous French coins. Associated with good luck and good fortune, the Angel design was originally created in 1792, by artist Augustin Dupre’. The 50 Francs Angel gold coin was minted in limited quantities from 1878-1904. The largest minting year was the 1904 edition with approximately 20,000 coins.
Design
The front side of the coin depicts the famous angel design. The motif features a standing guardian angel writing the constitution with a rooster to the right. The guardian angel is also referred to as a “genius”.
The reverse side shows a wreath with the nominal value of “50 Francs” and the date of issue in the center. The engravings around the outer edge read “LIBERTE’ EGALITE’ FRATERNITE”, which translates as “Liberty Equality Fraternity”. The mint mark “A” is below the wreath. All of the 50 Francs Angel coins were produced at the Paris Mint.
