Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was the first democratically elected president of the second French Republic and held this title from 1848-1852. He ruled as Emperor Napoleon III from 1852-1870. He was the nephew of the great military leader Napoleon Bonaparte.
There were three different types of 20 Franc Gold coins issued during the reign of Napoleon III. The 20 Franc Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte gold coin was the first edition and only struck in 1852. Just over 10 million coins were minted with the 1852 date.
Design Highlights
The front side of the coin depicts the right side profile of Louis. The inscription around the outer edge reads “LOUIS-NAPOLEON BONAPARTE”. The engravers name “BARRE” is embossed below the portrait.
The reverse side shows a laurel wreath with the nominal value of “20 Francs” and date of issue “1852” in the center. The outer edge also has an inscription which is “REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE”. These coins were minted at the Paris Mint.
