The Royal Mint’s collection inspired by the legend of Robin Hood would not be complete without the addition of the outlaw’s romantic interest, Maid Marian. Although the character was not part of the original tale she has appeared in the legend for many years, her image altered slightly to fit with the social ideas of the time, sometimes described as a virtuous aristocrat and others a fellow bandit equalling Robin’s archery skills. However, in her many guises she has become an essential part of the popular legend.
Maid Marian is depicted on the reverse of the coin, the fair maiden stands in profile view in Sherwood Forest, peering from behind a tree, with a quiver of arrows on her back. The details in the image are incredible, from the plaits in her long, flowing hair to the surrounding ivy and ferns and the bark of the tree and the fletching on the arrows. The initials JC for Jody Clark, the talented designer, can be seen on one of the oak leaves in the foreground. In the background there is a micro-dot texture for extra security.
The obverse of the coin, also designed by Jody Clark, shows Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The Maid Marian 1oz Gold Coin 2022 contains one troy ounce or 31.10 grams of 9.999 fine gold. It has a face value of 100 pounds and is legal tender in the United Kingdom. The design is also available in one troy ounce of fine silver plus 10oz.
This collection within the Myths & Legends series is a wonderful part of British folklore and a must for collectors. The exceptional quality of the piece and the highly regarded reputation of the Royal Mint in Wales make this coin also worthy of investment.
