China Panda 1/2oz Gold Coin 1987
The Chinese Panda Gold Coins were first issued in 1982. The fifth edition is the 1987 here in size ½ oz made of 99.9% fine gold. All Panda coins display the Temple of Heaven on the obverse. Chinese mints do usually not show mintmarks. But the 1987 edition displays two mintmarks “S” or “Y”.
Design/Appearance:
Obverse:
The obverse shows the usual representation of the Temple of Heaven. Chinese characters on the top read “People's Republic of China”. The year of issue „1987“ is shown at the bottom.
Reverse:
Standing on a rock, a single panda is drinking from river. Two bamboo trees are shown to the right of the drinking Panda. Chinese characters above the panda display size, 1/2, and purity „.999“ and „1/2 OZ Au.“. Below the panda motif the nominal value “50” and the Chinese sign for Yuan can be read. On the bottom right there is either an S or Y in a small box, these are the mintmarks of the two different mints.
Mintage and Measurements:
A total of 97,076 coins were minted in different mints.
The 1/2 oz coin has 27mm diameter with a thickness of 1.85mm.
