The Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Maple Leaf Coin in 1979 as a gold bullion coin. The reverse of the Maple Leaf ½ oz Gold Coin 2023 showcases the famous design originally created by Canadian artist Walter Ott. The design has been updated over the years with enhanced security features but Ott’s maple leaf continues to be its central element. It also includes micro-engraving which reinforces its security and there are radial lines in the background on both sides of the coin to further enhance these protective measures.
The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II which includes the dates of her reign from 1952 to 2022. The face value of twenty Canadian dollars is shown on this side.
The Maple Leaf ½ oz Gold Coin 2023 contains half a troy ounce of fine gold with a purity of 999.9/1000 which equates to a metric weight of 15.55 grams. The coin is 25.00 mm in diameter. It is also available in weights of 1 oz, ¼ oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz in gold plus a MapleGram 25 x 1g gold pack and 1 oz in silver.
