Maple Leaf 1oz Gold Coin 2020
Royal Canadian Mint
The Royal Canadian Mint is one of the largest and most popular issuers of high-quality gold and silver coins.
The Royal Canadian Mint was established in 1908 to produce Canada’s currency. It transitioned to Canadian ownership in 1931, having initially been an extension of the British Royal Mint. It has since become a world leader in coin manufacturing and it is recognised for its technological advancements, including the introduction of 99.99% pure gold coins and state-of-the-art security features using lasers, making its products some of the most secure and respected on the global market.
The Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Maple Leaf Coin in 1979 as a gold bullion coin, designed to offer investors a high-purity option. Originally struck with 99.9% gold purity, it was refined to 99.99% in 1982, making it one of the purest gold coins available globally. Following its success, the Maple Leaf series expanded, with the addition of silver and platinum versions in 1988, and palladium joining the lineup in 2005.
The reverse of the Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin 2020 displays the famous maple leaf design, by Canadian artist Walter Ott. First appearing on the Gold Maple Leaf Coin in 1979, the design is celebrated for its intricate detail and representation of Canada’s national symbol. The design has been amended slightly to incorporate advanced security features, such as micro-engraving, which has enhanced both the coin’s visual appeal and its protection against counterfeiting.
The obverse of the Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin, including the 2020 edition, features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait has evolved over time, with different effigies used to reflect the Queen’s likeness at various stages of her reign. The 2020 coin was designed by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt and has been in use since 2003. Unlike previous effigies that included a crown, Blunt’s design presents a more modern depiction of the Queen without a crown. In addition to the portrait, the obverse also includes the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II”, “50 DOLLARS” and the year of issue “2020”. Both the obverse and reverse of the coin feature finely engraved radial lines in the background, adding an extra layer of security.
The Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin 2020 contains one troy ounce of fine gold with a purity of 999.9/1000 which equates to a metric weight of 31.10 grams. The coin is 38.00 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 2.87 mm. It is also available in weights of ½ oz, ¼ oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz in gold plus a MapleGram 25 x 1g gold pack and 1 oz in silver.
The Maple Leaf Coin is widely acclaimed for its iconic maple leaf design, security features and its strong reputation as one of the most reliable and sought-after bullion coins, appealing to both investors and collectors around the world.
