History & Design

The Vienna Philharmonic was introduced in 1989. The coin was first minted in only two sizes: 1 oz and ¼ oz. In 1991 the 1/10 oz size was added and in 1994 the mint introduced the ½ oz Philharmonic.

The coin is named after the renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (Wiener Philharmoniker). The motif side of the coin shows the instruments of the orchestra which include a horn, bassoon, harp, cello (in the middle), 2 violas and 2 violins.

The value side depicts the pipe organ in the Golden Hall, where the world famous New Years eve concert takes place. The design was created by Thomas Pesendorfer, the Chief Engraver of the Austrian Mint.
