The 2002 “Year of the Horse” is the seventh release in the Lunar I Gold coin series from the Perth Mint. The series began in 1996 with the “Year of the Mouse” and ended in 2007 with the “Year of the Pig”. Each year depicts a different animal design from the Chinese Zodiac.
The Lunar I Gold coin series was so successful that the Perth Mint decided to launch the Lunar II Gold coin series in 2008. All of the gold coins in the Lunar I and II series have a purity of 99.99% gold.

The front side of the coin depicts a strong galloping horse. The engravings include the fine weight, purity, year of issue and Chinese character for horse.

The reverse side shows the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The inscriptions around the outer edge are “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRALIA” and “25 DOLLARS”.
