The Lunar Horse 1 oz Gold coin was released in 2002 and has a fineness of .9999 gold with a mintage of just 30,000 coins. The Lunar I Gold coin series from the Perth Mint was introduced in 1996 and consists of 12 unique coin designs from the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

All of the Lunar Gold coins have a purity of 99.99% gold and are backed by the Australian Government.

Year of the Horse

  • The Lunar Horse is the seventh animal in the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

  • According to the Chinese Zodiac, those born under the influence of the Lunar Horse are said to be active, energetic and animated. People with horse personalities love to take center stage and entertain audiences of all sizes.

  • The birth years of the Lunar Horse are 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, and 2026.

Design

The front side of the coin depicts a horse galloping towards the viewer. The design highlights in the finest detail the tail and mane of the horse. The Chinese character for horse is engraved on the right center edge of the coin.

The year of issue “2002” is shown on the left center edge. The fine weight and purity of “1 OZ 9999 GOLD” is inscripted below the image of the horse. A beaded circle surrounds the outer edge on both sides of the coin, which adds to the beauty of the design.

The reverse side shows the right side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with crown. The initials “IRB” are engraved below the portrait and represent artist and coin designer Ian Rank-Broadley. The inscriptions around the outer edge are the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II”, the country of origin, “AUSTRALIA” and the nominal value of “100 DOLLARS”.
