Design
The design of the Lunar II series changes annually and corresponds to the 12 animals in the Chinese Lunar calendar. The motif side of the 2017 Lunar II depicts a rooster standing on one leg in a field of bamboo leaves. In the upper right is the Chinese inscription for rooster. Below the motif are the words “Year of the Rooster”.
The value side of the coin features an image of Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait of the regent is a popular depiction on commonwealth coins. Surrounding the outer edge of the coin is the year “2017”, the nominal value “50 DOLLARS”, the country of origin “AUSTRALIA”, the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II” and the weight and fineness “½ OZ FINE GOLD”.
History
The Lunar II was introduced in 2008 and is the successor to the popular Lunar I series which was launched in 1996. The series is centered around the 12 zodiac signs in the ancient Chinese calendar.
Each year is represented by a different animal and the the 2017 Lunar II is the “Year of the Rooster”, which is the 10th coin in the series.
