The 2017 Lunar II Rooster 1oz Gold coin is available! Inspired by the ancient Chinese Lunar calendar, the Lunar II is a beautifully designed gold and silver coin series that is popular with investors and collectors.

The 2017 Lunar II Rooster gold coin is the 10th coin in the series. The series features the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac and started with the “Year of the Rat” in 2008 and ends with the “Year of the Pig” in 2019. The Lunar II gold coin is available in 10oz, 5oz, 2oz, 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz and 1/20oz.

Size, Fine Weight and Alloy

Due to the high fine content, the coin has a pure gold color, but is also very sensitive to scratches, since there are no silver or copper alloying components. In order to preserve the surface, the gold coins should not be removed from their protective capsule.

Appearance

Motif side

The motif side of the gold coin shows a crowing rooster standing on one leg. The background consists of bamboo branches which can be seen on both sides of the rooster. To the left of the motif is the Chinese character for "rooster". Below the motif are the words "Year of the Rooster". The mint mark "P" is on the right edge and stands for Perth Mint.

Value side

The value side of the gold coins shows an image of Queen Elizabeth II. Below the motif are the letters "IRB" which stand for designer Ian Rank Broadley. The portrait was designed in 1997.

The inscriptions around the outer edge read:

  • ELIZABETH II

  • AUSTRALIA

  • 1oz 9999 GOLD

  • 2017

  • 100 DOLLARS

Chinese Lunar Calendar

The Lunar II Series was introduced by the Perth Mint in gold and silver in 2008. The series features the 12 animals from the Chinese Lunar calendar. The term "Lunar" comes from the Latin word "luna" (moon). The Chinese moon calendar is one of the calendars that uses the lunisolar cycle. In Chinese astrology each year of the 12-year cycle is assigned an animal.

According to Chinese mythology, the 12 zodiacal signs were created when Buddha's animal world was invited to attend the Chinese New Year's festival. The 12 animals, who followed his invitation, were given a sequence according to their arrival.

This story is more than 2,000 years old and the sequence is still unchanged. The sequence starts with the year of "the rat", which is often referred to as "mouse" - the Chinese character allows both translations.

History of the Lunar Series

The Lunar Series II is the successor of the successful Lunar I series. Both Lunar series are minted in gold and silver. 2017 is the “Year of the Rooster” and is the 10th animal of the 12 year cycle in the Chinese zodiac.

The 12 Year Cycle of the Lunar II Coin Series:

  • Mouse 2008

  • Ox 2009

  • Tiger 2010

  • Rabbit 201

  • Dragon 2012

  • Snake 2013

  • Horse 2014

  • Goat 2015

  • Monkey 2016

  • Rooster 2017

  • Dog 2018

  • Pig 2019.

The most important differences compared to the first Australian Lunar series is the more modern motif design and the enlarged diameter of the coins. In order to create more space for the zodiac signs, the mintage year and fine weight was moved from the motif side to the value side.

Another difference to the Lunar I series is on the motif side of the Lunar II series. The names in the Lunar I series were only inscripted in Chinese characters. On the Lunar II series, the name is now written in both Chinese and English. It begins with "Year of the ..." in each year, followed by the animal name in English.

The Lunar Series II, as well as its predecessor Lunar I, is available in 1/20oz, 1/10oz, 1/4oz, 1oz, 2oz, 5oz, 10oz, 1kg (silver) and 10 kg (silver).

Year of the Rooster 2017

People who are born under the rooster zodiac sign are very determined and diligent, as well as self-confident and generous. In addition, people born under this sign are said to be faithful, loyal, understanding, caring and sensitive, but also take certain liberties.

The birth dates for people ruled by the Chinese lunar rooster include: 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005 and 2017.
