Published by the distinguished Perth Mint, Australia's official bullion mint. The Gold Kangaroo was first created when Australia decided to launch their own gold coin after the South African Krugerrand import ban in 1986.
Coins published up until 1989, featured images of the famous gold nuggets found on the continent during the 1800’s till 1980. However in 1989, the image was changed to that of a Kangaroo, an animal native to Australia, and synonymous with the country. However, coins have also featured the closely related Wallaroos and Wallabies, which are smaller than a Kangaroo. The change over to using an image of an animal made the coin more marketable, and appealing to investors and collectors.
Along with the Chinese Gold Panda, the Australian Kangaroo/Nugget coins are one of the few legal tender bullion coins that change their image each year.
Design/Appearance
The 1994 1oz coin features the image of a Whiptailed Wallaby sitting facing left, with a joey in her pouch.The name is inscribed along the top of her tail. A Wallaby is smaller than a Kangaroo and Wallaroo.
The obverse of the coin features a right facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which was designed by sculptor Raphael Maklouf.
