he 1oz 1987 Australian Gold Nugget, published by Australia's reputable Perth Mint. The Australian Nugget/Kangaroo was first created when Australia decided to launch their own gold coin after the South African Krugerrand import ban in 1986. This coin is the second year of their Nugget series before the design changed to that of a Kangaroo in 1989, making the coin recognisable around the world as a coin of Australia. This coin features an image of the Nugget ‘Welcome Stranger” one of the largest nuggets found in 1869. Each coin made from 1986-1989, depending on the denomination, features a different famous nugget. The name of the nugget is written on the reverse of the coin, under the image. The 1987 1oz coin features the image, designed by Stuart Devlin, of the gold nugget, “Welcome Stranger” found on the 5th February 1869. The name is inscribed under the design. The obverse of the coin features a right facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which was designed by sculptor Raphael Maklouf.
