The 1/2oz 1986 Gold Nugget Coin, the first edition in the series, with only a mintage of 3,000 coins, published by the prestigious Perth Mint. The Australian Nugget was first created when Australia decided to introduce their own gold coin after the South African Krugerrand import ban in 1986.
Coins made in 1986, depending on the denomination, feature a different famous nugget. The name of the nugget is inscribed on the reverse of the coin, under the image.
This ½ oz coin features the nugget ‘Hand of Faith’ which was found by a metal detector in 1980 in Kingower, Victoria.
The obverse features and effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
