The 1997 Lunar Ox is the second coin in the highly successful Lunar I Gold coin series from the Perth Mint. Each year depicts a new animal design from the 12 year Chinese Lunar Calendar. The series began in 1996 with the “Year of the Mouse” and ended in 2007 with the “Year of the Pig”.

Design
The front side of the coin depicts a large, strong Ox standing on a field with head turned to the left. The image was designed by Jovan Radanovich. Below the Ox is the weight and purity of “1 OZ 9999 GOLD”. On the left outer edge is the Chinese character for Ox and the year of issue “1997”, which is engraved vertically. Surrounding the outer edge is an ornamental circle of dots.
The reverse side depicts the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as a young women. The portrait was designed by artist and engraver Raphael Maklouf. The inscriptions around the outer edge are the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II”, the country of origin “AUSTRALIA” and the nominal value of “100 DOLLARS”. Similar to the front side, there is a circle of dots that surrounds the outer edge.
