The 1996 “Year of the Mouse” is the first edition of the highly successful Lunar Gold coin series from the Perth Mint. The series ran from 1996 to 2007 and is based on the Chinese Zodiac.
The 1996 1/20 oz Lunar Mouse gold coin is 24 karat gold (.9999) and has a mintage of 7,405 coins.
The front side of the coin depicts the Lunar Mouse on a field of rocks and grass. The engravings include the year of issue, fine weight and gold content.
The reverse side shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as a young woman. The inscriptions are “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRALIA” and “5 DOLLARS”.
