History – Gold Rush, Colonial Minting and a Modern Refinery
The Perth Mint was established by the British Colonial Treasury in 1899, during the Western Australian gold rush that had erupted in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder region in 1893. Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile was one of the richest square miles of gold ore ever discovered – and required a local mint to process the ore into coins and bars rather than shipping raw gold to Melbourne or Sydney.
