The Owl of Athena is representative of both the goddess of wisdom and the city of Athens. It has a cultural significance and is a symbol for knowledge and wisdom. It is featured on Athenian currency and often seen throughout Greek art and literature.
The reverse of the Niue Owl of Athena 1oz Silver Coin 2021 was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley and displays the owl sitting on a small branch under a crescent moon. There is also an olive with a couple of leaves included in the design. Underneath the inscription reads '1OZ .999 FINE SILVER' and details the weight and fineness. The initials 'A☉E' are shown with the letter 'O' containing a central dot, symbolic of the sun. The letters stand for Alethia Orno Eternia" which means “Truth and Honor for Eternity”.
On the obverse of the coin you will find a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Also displayed is the year of issue and the monetary denomination. The coin has a face value of two New Zealand dollars and is legal tender. Both sides of the coin have a wide reeded rim and it has a reeded edge.
