The Royal Tudor Beasts collection from the Royal Mint in Wales was created to represent the ten stone statues displayed at Hampton Court Palace in Richmond upon Thames in London. The idea behind the collection was to honour these symbols of the nation’s rich history.
The Lion of England is proudly displayed on the obverse of the coin, the majestic beast is wearing a crown and clutching a shield which includes a display of heraldic symbols including the iconic Tudor Rose, the Three Lions of England and the Fleurs-de-Lys. The fierce-looking lion with teeth and claws bared was designed by the Royal Mint’s David Lawerence, a talented sculptor who has been responsible for a number of the mint’s masterpieces. The background of the image has a surface animation texture for additional security.
The reverse of the coin displays Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty the Queen. Royal Mint bullion coins are no longer issued with this portrait.
The coin is struck in 999.9 fine silver and has a denomination of five pounds. It has a fine weight of two troy ounces or 62.20 grams. The coin is also available as a 10oz silver coin, 1oz in platinum plus 1oz and ¼ oz in gold.
