The Kookaburra 1oz Silver Coin 2020 is one of the most iconic bullion coins produced by the Perth Mint in Western Australia. Known for its call that sounds like it is laughing, this native bird is the largest of the kingfisher family.
The reverse of the 2020 coin features the kookaburra sitting on a rooftop with its beak open mid-call with the rays of the sun shining in the background. The beautiful design, by Jennifer McKenna, celebrates the 30 year anniversary of the Kookaburra coin. Also included is the inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA 30TH ANNIVERSARY’, The Perth mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, and the weight and purity. There is also a micro-laser engraved letter, visible only under magnification, which acts as an enhanced security feature.
The obverse of the coin displays Stuart Devlin's depiction of a kookaburra on a tree stump surrounded by native foliage, which appeared on the 1990 coin. It is contained within a circle, above which the years 1990 and 2020 are inscribed either side of a miniature version of Jody Clark’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II which overlaps into the legend. The legend reads, ‘ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA ᐧ 1 DOLLAR ᐧ’. The coin has a face value of one Australian dollar and is recognised as legal tender in Australia.
The Kookaburra 1oz Silver Coin 2020 contains one troy ounce of 999.9/1000 fine silver, weighing 31.10 grams and measuring 40.60 mm in diameter. The 2020 design is also available in 1 kilo and 10oz silver, as well as 1/10oz in fine gold.
