History
The American Eagle gold coin has a rich history. The front of the coin which depicts Lady Liberty descends from the 1907 gold “double eagle” designed by the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
The reverse of the coin features a new design by the sculptor Miley Busiek in 1986. The image displays a bald eagle with an olive branch, flying above a female eagle toward their eaglet pictured in a nest.
The intricate and detailed design, along with the unique composition of the American Eagle make it an attractive option for investors and collectors.
Advantages
American Eagle gold coins give investors a combination of durability and beauty. The 91.67% gold, 3% silver and 5.33% copper content is truly a unique composition for a gold coin.
Also, the detailed design featuring Lady Liberty on the front of the coin is a globally recognized image. As result, the coin is popular for both investors and collectors.
Fractional gold coins like the American Eagle 1/4 oz carry a higher premium than 1 ounce gold bullion coins. This is due to higher manufacturing costs for smaller weight gold coins.
With lower and more varied price points, fractional gold coins give the investor flexibility. Smaller weight coins can sometimes be easier to liquidate and barter with. Also, smaller weight coins allow investors to purchase gold at lower price points.
