The Rand Refinery was the inventor of the standard 1oz investment gold coin. With the launch of the Krugerrand in 1967 it still produces the most well-known gold coin in the world today.
The Krugerrand got its name from the former South African President Paul Kruger and the rand, which is the currency of South Africa.
The obverse of the coin displays the image of Paul Kruger designed by Otto Schultz. The words "SUID-AFRIKA ᐧ SOUTH AFRICA" are displayed around the image.
The reverse features a pronking South African springbok antelope. The words "KRUGERRAND" and the mintage year are displayed on the reverse together with the weight of the coin.
The Krugerrand ½ oz Gold Coin 2024 has a purity of 917/1000. It is minted from ½ troy ounce of fine gold and has a fine weight of 15.55 grams. It has a diameter of 27.00 mm and a thickness of 2.215 mm. The Krugerrand is also available in weights of 1oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz in gold and 1oz in silver.
