Krugerrand 1oz Gold Coin 2024
Rand Refinery
The Rand Refinery was the inventor of the standard 1oz investment gold coin. With the launch of the Krugerrand in 1967 it still produces the most well-known gold coin in the world today.
The Krugerrand is a world-renowned bullion coin originating in South Africa and was first minted in 1967. It is named after former South African President Paul Kruger and the country's currency, the rand. Paul Kruger was born in 1825 and was a pivotal figure in late 19th-century South African history, serving as the third president of the South African Republic. Known as "Oom Paul" he resisted British imperialism during the Second Anglo-Boer War, becoming a symbol of Afrikaner independence. Kruger served as the President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900.
The obverse of the Krugerrand features a portrait of Paul Kruger created by Otto Schultz in 1892. The legend surrounding the image is inscribed with the words "SUID-AFRIKA" (South Africa in Afrikaans) and "SOUTH AFRICA" in English.
The reverse of a Krugerrand features a depiction of a pronking springbok, a gazelle-like antelope that is native to South Africa. It was created by Coert Steynberg in 1947. The word "KRUGERRAND" and the year of mintage are inscribed on the reverse together with the weight in ounces. The design of the Krugerrand's reverse has remained relatively consistent since the coin's introduction, with only minor variations in the details of the springbok over the years. The design reflects the rich natural heritage of South Africa and contributes to the coin's iconic status in the world of bullion coins.
The purity of the gold Krugerrand is 917/1000, it has a high copper content to make it more durable and this is the reason that it is reddish in colour. The Krugerrand does not display a face value but it is still recognised as legal tender in South Africa.
The Krugerrand 1oz Gold Coin 2024 is minted from 1 troy ounce of fine gold and has a fine weight of 31.10 grams. It has a diameter of 32.77mm and a thickness of 2.84mm. The Krugerrand is also available in weights of ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10oz in gold and 1oz in silver.
The Krugerrand's historical significance and distinctive design have solidified its place in the world of precious metal investments.
