The 20 Franc “Angel” gold coin is one of the most famous french gold coins. Also known as the 20 Franc “genius” or “lucky angel”, the design was created in 1791 by French artist Augustine Dupre’.
The story behind the “lucky angel” gold coin started after the French Revolution during the period of the reign of terror. Dupre’ was captured and about to be executed by guillotine. However, a bolt of lighting struck and panicked the executioner allowing him to escape. He attributed his good fortune to the Angel gold coin he carried in his pocket. Over the years the legend grew and the Angel gold coin became associated with “good luck”.
It was said that even Napoleon Bonaparte carried a Gold French Angel in his pocket. However, it is believed that he lost the coin the night before he was defeated at the battle at Waterloo.
