The Royal Mint’s popular Myths and Legends Collection started with the three-coin Robin Hood series in 2021. Robin’s trusted friend Little John, ironically nicknamed due to his great stature, is the third in the series, following Robin himself and Maid Marian to complete the trio.
Designed by notable Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark the reverse image features the character amongst the trees of Sherwood Forest poised for battle in an imposing stance with a staff in his hands. Each coin in this series is beautifully detailed and this is no exception with the bark of the tree carefully sculpted and the foliage in the foreground easily identifiable as native ferns.
The obverse displays Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the face value of the coin, 100 pounds sterling, displayed around the outer rim.
The Little John 1oz Gold Coin is minted from 1 troy ounce of fine gold, with a purity of 999.9/1000. The fine weight is 31.10 grams and the coin has a diameter of 32.69 mm and a thickness of 2.79 mm. The design is also available as a 1oz fine silver coin.
The popularity of the legend of Robin Hood make this coin and the series very collectible and the quality craftsmanship and well regarded reputation of the Royal Mint in Wales also offer them as a possible investment option.
