Design/Appearance
Obverse:
The picture on the obverse remains the same since the first minting in 1982. It shows the Hall of Prayers for Abundant Harvest in the Temple of Heaven. Chinese characters are shown on the top reading "Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo" meaning People's Republic of China. The year of issue „1988“ is shown at the bottom under the temple design.
Reverse:
One adult Panda is shown sitting on the ground in a bamboo grove holding a bamboo branch. In a circular ring around the panda motif Chinese characters display size, 1, then metric purity „.999“ and „1 OZ Au“ Below the panda are the numbers 100 and the symbol for Yuan. On each side of the nominal value “100” is the outline of a hollow centred flower.

A total of 289,055 coins were minted.
The 1988 1 oz coin has a 32mm diameter with a thickness of 2.70mm.
