The China Panda 15g Gold Coin 2018 is here! Gold Pandas are popular with both collectors and investors from all over the world. The design of the Panda changes every year but will always feature one or more Pandas, which is the national animal of China.

The reverse side of the coin features the iconic image of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. The Panda was first introduced in 1982 and is produced by the official mint of the People’s Republic of China. Panda gold coins have beautiful designs and are backed by the Chinese government.

Fine Weight, Fineness and Face Value

Since 2016, China Panda gold coins are no longer issued in ounces, but with the metric gram system. The 15 g China Panda 2018 is the counterpart to the 1/2oz coin.

Appearance

Value side

The value side of the China Panda Gold coin always remains unchanged, showing the Temple of Heaven (Chinese: Tiantán) in Beijing. Above the temple, in a semicircle, are the words "People's Republic of China" in Chinese characters. Below the motif is the embossing year.

Scene side

On the back is the motif of the panda, which is a national symbol in China. The panda is native to China and is called the “national treasure”. Every year the depiction of the panda changes which adds to the coins global appeal.

The 2018 Gold Panda depicts a giant panda holding a single bamboo branch with several leaves. In the upper outer edge of the coin are the inscriptions “15g” “Au” “999”, which represent the weight, the elemental symbol for gold and the fineness.  At the bottom of the coin, the denomination of 200 yuan is embossed.

History

The Gold China Panda was introduced in 1982 by the official mint of the People’s Republic of China and included 4 sizes: 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz. In 1983 the 1/20oz size was added. In some years larger Pandas weighing 5oz and 12oz were also issued. China Panda Gold coins are minted in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Shenzhen.

In 2001 the annual design change was put on hold and thus the 2002 Gold Pandas were identical to the 2001 version. However, collectors spoke out in favor of the annual design changes and China went back to its original policy.

Benefits

China Gold Pandas are continuing to grow in global popularity. Both investors and collectors are attracted to the unique designs and the high level of gold purity. The change in 2016 from ounces to metric grams is another distinguishing feature of the coin program.

Because of the popularity of the Panda, the coin is easy to buy and sell at most precious metals bullion dealers around the world. The coins can trade at a premium due to the annual design changes and the different annual mintages.

It is important to note that pure gold coins like the 2018 15g Gold Panda are susceptible to surface scratches and therefore should be kept in their protective cover.
